It is with great sadness that IBE announces the death of its esteemed Treasurer, Anthony Mulenga Zimba. A victim of COVID-19, Anthony passed away in hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. Anthony worked tirelessly on behalf of people with epilepsy and those who care for them. His particular focus was on his beloved Africa and, as a result of his efforts, many IBE chapters in the region were supported through the IBE Promising Strategies Program in a range of projects aimed at improving their quality of life through training, advocacy and employment opportunities.

We were greatly saddened to hear of the untimely passing of a dear husband, father and grand-father yesterday. Vinod was well known at IBE and was held in high respect and with great warmth. It was a privilege to have had him as a member of the IBE Board from 2009 to 2013.

With the addition on July 27th of “Patient Case – Greg (42 y/o),” there are now seven cases available on the ILAE Academy. By year end, 15 cases for Level 1 will be available and will be automatically available if you purchase the Level 1 Full Package. The ILAE Eastern Mediterranean Regional Board (ILAE-EMR) will hold a series of monthly webinars covering various subjects of epilepsy in this region to ensure continuity in dissemination of knowledge and to encourage active participation of members from our region. The topics range from basic to advanced, from neonatal epilepsy to issues in the elderly, and have been chosen according to the needs of and suggestions from members of chapters in the region..

Applications are open for a part-time position of a project manager to coordinate the work of the task force and its working groups. This will be a part-time position (10 hours weekly) for one year. Responsibilities will include helping the working groups document their efforts in reports, facilitating communication between the working groups and the Task Force leadership, and assisting the working groups in the creation of the preclinical common data element among other duties. Application deadline 11 September 2020.

Position details and requirements

Elections for the ILAE Vice President, Secretary General and Treasurer for the 2021-25 term are open. According to the Constitution, all newly elected members of the Executive Committee must be primary members of different countries, and not more than two can come from the same region. Chapters have been asked to vote for five persons from at least three regions on the list. If they vote for fewer than five candidates, the vote must include candidates from three regions. Contact your chapter leadership to voice your preferences.

The Michael Prize is one of the most highly regarded international awards for the best contribution to scientific and clinical research which promote further developments in epileptology. Awarded biennially, it is specially designed to attract scientists not older than 45 years of age. Submission deadline: 31 December, 2020.
