Surgery can cure epilepsy, but it’s rarely used. For example, in the United States, only about 1% of people with epilepsy will ever be evaluated for surgery, and fewer than that undergo it. At the same time, some centers oversell surgery, offering it to patients without explaining the full range of consequences. |

In India, the Community Interventions For Epilepsy (CIFE) trial has enrolled 255 people with epilepsy in impoverished communities. They are randomized to receive either usual care, or monthly visits in their homes from primary health care personnel, who provide epilepsy medications, education and counseling. The hope is to improve medication adherence, reduce stigma and promote self-management. |
